The theme for today's photo it meatless. Every Friday during Lent you are not supposed to eat meat, but do you know why?

There are many reasons out there that provide an explanation of the meatless Fridays during Lent. There are two that I have found to be the most relevant to my life. The first is the idea that a meal based around fish or vegetables is a cheaper meal. Hundreds of year ago only the wealthy at meat. Meat was a costly meal while fish was easily caught and prepared by the individual. Because of this we must focus on eating a humbling meal. We are not cutting out meat because God wants us to be vegetarian, but rather that God wants us to be humble. Yes, maybe we can afford a meal of meat, but by eating a more modest meal we are following in the footsteps of Christ who lived a life full of humility. The second idea that I really appreciate is the belief that because Jesus sacrificed his life for us, we can make a small sacrifice as well. While giving up meat for the day is not nearly as huge as giving your life, it is a little reminder for us, every Friday, about what Jesus did for us.

For the upcoming meatless Fridays really keep in mind why you are not eating meat. Sometimes all you want is a burger or some chicken, but let that craving be a reminder that Jesus died for our sins. Tell yourself that if Jesus can go through that much suffering for us, you can avoid meat for the day. If it were easy, it would not be considered a sacrifice.
